Berryl Claire Asiago is an energy lawyer in pursuit of her doctoral studies at the UEF law school, in Joensuu Finland. She has a substantive legal academic background and hands-on experience in litigation of petroleum industry in a number of African countries.
Prior to joining UEF Law School, Berryl worked for WOI South Sudan, where she carried out a feasibility and analytical research study, encompassing the establishment of the organisation to set up house in South Sudan. Presenting a credible report and affiliations with various Government authorities and Ministries which included (Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Commerce and Investments and Ministry of Justice). This informed the decision to set up the WOI presence in South Sudan. Set up a sustainable income generating projects with a turn-over of 1million USD that allowed the organization to run South Sudan operations self-sustainably with little financial help from headquarters in London. This provision provided for autonomous operation in South Sudan.
Currently her work at the University of Eastern Finland is strongly anchored in International energy law, with particular interests in permanent sovereignty of natural resources, foreign investment treaties and rights of a state to regulate in the oil and gas sectors. Berryl holds a bachelor degree(LLB) from the University of Mysore (India), a master’s degree(LLM) in International Banking and Insurance law from London Metropolitan University (UK), and a postgraduate diploma (LLM) in International & European Energy from the University of Eastern Finland.
Berryl Claire has authored several scholarly articles and technical reports on subjects, such as Legal aspects of project financing in the oil and gas sectors, Shale gas regulation in the US and Europe, Position of national oil companies in joint agreements, Regulatory regimes and institutional frameworks of some African countries (Namibia and South Sudan), and various topics on Local Content development in the oil and gas sectors. Berryl Claire Asiago is an active member of professional associations like OGEL and AIPN.
